Why replace when you can renovate.
Having worked in the wood flooring and joinery industry for many years we were constantly asked if there was anything we could do with the existing carpet tack riddled creaky staircase. Could we utilise the existing stairs structure without pulling it out and half the house along with it costing a small fortune, hassle , time and aggravation . We needed to come up with a material and method that would tighten up the old steps and adhere to the cupped and warped surface and was an easy to clean real wood surface that would fit within most peoples renovation budget. We came up with a combination of solid and engineered oak ( Oak Unique) Although it requires a great deal of cutting and trimming during stairs installation, the finished result is always rewarding .
Oak unique :Stairs & Landing make over. Available in 1 colour- clear coated oak. The 15mm pre-finished engineered board has a 6mm solid top layer and solid front cover trim/nosing with a 55mm front view. The risers are cut from the same board. The engineered board allows for a tight fit and will not warp or twist. All the materials are stuck with a heavy duty adhesive. Another advantage to this material is that the landing flooring is the exact match. The side strings are cladded with the same and capped off with a 15mm polished real oak veneered MDF. After previous preparation in our workshop a standard make over with 14 straight steps and an average landing takes approximately 9 hours to install (1 day) Excluding bannisters (1 more day)
Plank original: Stairs & landing make over. The solid wood components used here are similar to what’s used in the original staircase construction. Available in clear oak-stained oak-walnut-teak-mahogany and pine. A solid board with a 25mm front view. The risers and side string can be cut from solid wood, however we think this is a waste of hardwood and we offer you a choice of a veneered material if you wish. We receive this solid wood in an unfinished state allowing you to choose a finish such as a satin, gloss, oil or wax. All the materials are stuck with a heavy duty adhesive. The material for the landing must be discussed in more detail with this option.
Both of the above options can be applied to a closed string stairs originally constructed from mdf-soft wood-hardwood-plywood-metal or concrete. However open string/cut string staircases where the spindles are attached to the existing steps, requires a lot more detail and discussion with the customer so as to explain the different option.
A white-off white or colour of choice and brushed aluminium is an option for both on the risers or side strings. LED lighting can also be installed to both . Non slip surface tape is an option for oak unique . This tape or an inserted rubber or aluminium bead can be inserted into the solid plank option. As above a standard stairs will also take approximately 9 hours to install.
Bannister rail replacement or re-painting must be carried out prior to the stairs & landing make over.
Please note all of the materials above have natural colouring and variation. Please consider this when incorporating into your overall interior design or colour scheme. This is not a plastic laminateproduct .
